| Sažetak: | Addresses epidemiology, diagnosis and assessment, comorbidity, and the life course of the disorder, examining how bipolar illness presents differently in children than in adults and how it can be identified and studied. Pioneering research is presented on the clinical characteristics of childhood mania, and development of the widely used WASH-U-KSADS assessment instrument is reviewed. Also examined are the various forms of the illness in children and adolescents; outcomes and suicide risks; and a range of comorbidities, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorders, pervasive developmental disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse problems. An important chapter is devoted to animal models of the neuroscientific bases of bipolar disorder. Findings from novel neuroimaging studies are presented, as are promising theories and data research, sleep studies, and genetic research. Several chapters describe and evaluate available treatment approaches, including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and family-based psychoeducation and support. Although pharmacological and non-drug treatments have primarily been tested in adults, contributors review what is know about the special needs of child patients and offer useful treatment guidelines for clinicians. |
